This coin is still valid as legal tender. It commemorates both the 34'th president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the recent Apollo XI Moon landing where Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. These coins were minted between 1971 and 1978 and were the first dollar coin produced by the U.S. Mint since the last strike of the peace dollar in 1935. The introduction of the series was confronted with some voices of reason who were calling for a silver silver backed coin. As a result some of coins were struck using 60% copper and 40% silver for the core, and 80% silver with 20% copper for the outer layer.
