Why did gold rise after the open?
Gold started the day weak. After the jobless-claims data we covered in our pre-market note, it dipped to $4,105.50 around noon ET, staying above the $4,100 area that held on Wednesday. From there the bond market took over. The 10-year Treasury yield slid from about 5.31% at noon to 5.23% by 1:30 PM ET, and gold climbed back to about $4,133 by the close.
Lower yields reduce the cost of holding a metal that pays no interest. The dollar index also eased, from 102.38 this morning to 102.12 at the close.
The bigger move came later. Between 9:00 and 9:45 PM ET, as Chinese markets opened for Friday, gold rose from about $4,148 to $4,175 while the dollar slipped below 102. Reports from Asia credited the softer dollar, lower yields and expectations of continued gold buying by China’s central bank. We did not find a single headline behind that move.

The day’s main event: the 30-year bond auction
The Treasury sold $22 billion of 30-year bonds at 1:00 PM ET (12:00 PM CT). The bonds priced at a 5.618% yield, below the level traded just before the sale, and buyers bid for 2.54 times the amount offered, above the 2.41 average of the past six auctions, according to Reuters. Foreign and other indirect bidders took about 72% of the sale.
The 5.618% yield is still the highest for that maturity since 2000, so long-term borrowing costs remain high. But solid demand eased worries about who will buy U.S. debt, and yields across the curve moved lower. The 2-year yield ended at 4.76%, down from 4.82% this morning.
The CME FedWatch tool showed an 82.8% chance the Fed holds at its October 27–28 meeting and a 17.2% chance of a hike, lower hike odds than the 21.6% we saw this morning.
How much of the move was the dollar?
Less than half, by our estimate. From this morning’s pull to 11:45 PM ET, gold rose 1.4%. Based on how gold has moved against the dollar during the day, the dollar’s 0.3% slide accounts for about 0.6 percentage points of that. Gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) rose about 1.0%, so most of the gain was not just a weaker dollar.

Oil, Iran and the rest of the day’s news
- Oil: Brent crude settled up 4.1% at $104.28 a barrel and WTI rose 3.6% to $91.49, the biggest gain in a month, after more Iranian attacks on tankers and hurricane-related output cuts in the U.S. Gulf, Bloomberg reported. CNN reported that crossings through the Strait of Hormuz fell to a two-month low.
- Iran: President Trump said Thursday the U.S. would not attack Iran before the November midterm elections, according to market reports. Treasury yields gave back their oil-driven rise after the comments.
- Fed speakers: St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said further tightening would be needed to bring inflation back to 2%, without saying whether he would back a hike this month, Investing.com reported.
Higher oil usually pushes yields up through inflation worries, which has weighed on gold for weeks. Today oil rose and yields still fell, and gold followed yields.
Silver price today: down at the close, back above $60 overnight
Silver fell to $58.54 around noon ET and closed at $59.19, down 1.0% on the day. Overnight it climbed back above $59.60 and $60, reaching $60.25. The gold/silver ratio fell to 69.5 from 70.0 this morning. A falling ratio means silver is gaining on gold.
Mining shares joined in during the U.S. session. The ratio of junior silver miners to silver (SILJ/SLV) rose 2.3% on the day, and gold miners gained 0.7% against gold (GDX/GLD). Gold miners are still near the low end of their two-week range against the metal.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver
Gold moved about $75 between this morning’s low and tonight’s high. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:
- Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so an order placed tonight or tomorrow uses that moment’s price.
- Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms.
- Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions
How did gold close today?
Gold spot was near $4,133.69 an ounce at the 5:00 PM ET close on Oct 8, 2026, up $22.36 (0.5%) from Wednesday’s close. In overnight trading it rose to $4,180.10 and was near $4,176 at 11:45 PM ET.
Why did gold go up today?
Mainly lower Treasury yields. The 10-year yield fell from 5.32% in the morning to about 5.23% after the 30-year bond auction drew solid demand, and the dollar index slipped about 0.3%. Gold rose from its $4,105.50 low to about $4,134 at the close.
Why didn’t higher oil prices hurt gold today?
Oil rose about 4%, which usually lifts yields through inflation worries. Today yields fell anyway, helped by the bond auction and by President Trump saying the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterms. With yields lower, gold rose.
What is the silver price today?
Silver closed near $59.19 at 5:00 PM ET on Oct 8, 2026, down about 1.0% on the day, after a low of $58.54. Overnight it climbed back to about $60.11.
Is it a good time to buy gold after a rise like this?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term highs or lows. Some buyers wait for pullbacks; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
