The short version

  • Gold price today: about $4,080 an ounce at 8:35 AM ET, down $83 (2.0%) from Tuesday’s close and at its lowest level in two weeks.
  • Silver price today: about $59.11, down 3.7%. The gold/silver ratio rose to 69, the top of its two-week range.

Why is gold down today?

Gold ended Tuesday near $4,164 and drifted lower through Asia and London. Between 8:15 and 8:30 AM ET it fell from about $4,120 to $4,081, on nearly three times normal volume. No economic data was scheduled then, and the dollar and yields moved only modestly in that window, so the exact trigger is unclear. The low as of 8:35 AM ET was $4,073.50.

The backdrop is the one that has weighed on metals for most of the past two weeks: oil. Iran has stepped up attacks on tankers around the Strait of Hormuz, and Brent crude is holding near $100 a barrel. Higher oil raises inflation expectations and the odds of more Fed rate hikes, which push Treasury yields and the dollar higher. Overnight, the 10-year Treasury yield rose 5 basis points to 5.34% and the dollar index gained 0.6%. Gold pays no interest, so when yields rise, holding it costs more by comparison.

Over the past two weeks, escalation in the Gulf has tended to push gold lower through this oil-to-yields channel. That runs against the usual rule of thumb that conflict is good for gold, and it’s why our desk watches oil and yields first.

How much of gold’s drop was the dollar?

About half, by our estimate. The U.S. Dollar Index rose 0.59% overnight to 102.44. Based on how gold has moved against the dollar over the past two weeks, that accounts for roughly 0.9 percentage points of gold’s 2% decline. The other 1.1 points came from higher yields and selling in the metal itself.

A second check: gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) fell about 1.4%. If the dollar explained the whole move, that figure would be close to flat.

Silver price today: why silver fell faster

Silver dropped 3.7% to about $59.11, almost twice gold’s move. Its low as of 8:35 AM ET was $58.99, below the Oct 2 low of $59.69. Silver usually moves more than gold in both directions because a larger share of its demand comes from industry and it trades in a smaller market.

The gold/silver ratio (how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys) rose from 67.9 to 69.0, its highest reading in two weeks. A rising ratio means silver is lagging gold. For buyers who track the ratio, a higher number means a dollar buys more silver relative to gold than it did at Tuesday’s close.

Over the past two weeks a typical day for gold covered about $66 from high to low, and 80% of days stayed inside $82. Today has already covered nearly $100, so volatility is running well above normal.

What the Fed is expected to do

According to the CME FedWatch tool, futures markets price a 78% chance that the Fed holds rates at 3.75%–4.00% at its October 27–28 meeting, a 22% chance of a hike, and no chance of a cut. The Fed raised rates by a quarter point to that range in September. The 10-year Treasury yield is above 5.3% and the 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, is 2.95%. Higher real rates raise the cost of holding a metal that pays no interest, which is why rates remain the main headwind for gold.

That’s why this afternoon’s minutes matter. If they show officials leaning toward another hike to counter oil-driven inflation, yields could rise further. If they sound patient, some of this morning’s pressure could ease. Update: we covered the reaction in our market close note.

What today’s move means if you buy physical gold or silver

Swings like today’s matter most to short-term traders. Many of our customers buy on a schedule or add on down days, and they compare premiums as well as spot. A few practical points:

  • Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so the price you lock in is today’s price.
  • Compare the premium over spot. Most products on our site show their “% over spot” under the price, so you can compare a coin with a bar on equal terms.
  • Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
  • Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
  • Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price today?

Gold spot traded near $4,080 an ounce at 8:35 AM ET on Oct 7, 2026, down about 2% from Tuesday’s close, with a range of $4,073.50 to $4,170 so far that morning. For the current bid and ask, see our live metal prices page.

Why is gold going down today?

Gold fell about 2% by 8:35 AM ET on Oct 7, 2026 as Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar rose, both of which tend to weigh on gold. Oil near $100 a barrel, amid Iranian attacks on tankers around the Strait of Hormuz, has kept inflation and rate-hike worries high. The sharpest drop came at 8:15 AM ET with no clear single trigger.

Why did silver fall more than gold?

Silver is a smaller market with heavy industrial demand, so it usually moves more than gold in both directions. On Oct 7, 2026 it fell about 3.7%, pushing the gold/silver ratio to 69.

When are the Fed minutes released?

Minutes from the Fed’s September meeting are scheduled for 2:00 PM ET (1:00 PM CT) on Wednesday, Oct 7, 2026.

Is a down day a good time to buy gold?

We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows. Some buyers add on down days; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
