Gold Price Today: Gold Steady at $4,168 as Silver Gains 1%
Gold rose overnight as oil eased, then gave the gain back as the dollar and short-term Treasury yields firmed. Silver kept most of its rise. Here’s what moved metals before the New York open, the levels in play, and the week ahead with the Fed in its quiet period.

The short version
- Gold price today: $4,168.10 an ounce on our ask at 8:40 AM ET, down $1.50 (0.04%) from Friday’s closing ask of $4,169.60. Spot reached $4,190.42 overnight and is back near $4,161.
- Silver price today: $57.72 on our ask, up $0.59 (1.0%). The gold/silver ratio fell to 72.2 from 73.1 at Friday’s close.
- Oil: Brent crude reopened near $109.65 on Sunday evening and slipped to $106.82 by 3:30 AM ET, while gold climbed. Brent was back at about $108.30 by 8:30 AM ET.
- Why gold gave it back: the dollar index rose 0.15% and the 2-year Treasury yield rose to 4.75%. Fed funds futures still price a December hike as likely, about 89%.
- What’s next: the Fed is in its quiet period before the Oct 27–28 meeting, so this week’s drivers are oil, the dollar and Friday’s business surveys. Gold is holding above $4,155, Friday’s floor.
Why is gold flat today?
Gold reopened Sunday at 6:00 PM ET at $4,167.55 spot, close to Friday’s last spot price of $4,165.42, with no weekend gap. Over the next nine hours it climbed to $4,190.42 at 3:30 AM ET. The move came on light volume, below the usual level for a 15-minute bar.
Oil set the tone. Brent crude, which touched $110 on Friday on reports of attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, eased from $109.65 at the reopen to $106.82 at 3:30 AM ET, the same bar as gold’s high. In recent weeks lower oil has helped gold, because it eases inflation worries and the pressure on the Fed to raise rates.
The gain faded after that. The dollar index reached 102.08 at 3:45 AM ET, Brent bounced back above $108, and the 2-year Treasury yield, the one most tied to Fed expectations, rose from about 4.72% to 4.75% after 7:00 AM ET. Spot gold slipped to $4,158.81 at 8:00 AM ET. Stocks gave no safe-haven push: Nasdaq 100 futures were up 1.29% at 8:28 AM ET after Friday’s tech sell-off, and the VIX volatility index was 18.6.
Gold spot (XAU/USD), past two weeks
How much was the dollar?
Most of the small dip. The U.S. Dollar Index is up 0.15% at 101.94 since Friday afternoon. Based on how gold traded against the dollar since the reopen, that move alone would have trimmed gold by about 0.15%. Spot gold is down 0.10%, so the dollar explains this morning’s move, with nothing left over that points to gold-specific buying or selling.
The link between the two was looser than usual overnight, because oil was doing more of the work. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for buyers holding other currencies. Over the past two weeks gold is up 0.1% and the dollar is down 0.3%.

Silver price today: up 1% while gold is flat
Silver is at $57.72 on our ask, up $0.59 from Friday’s $57.13. It fell 0.75% on Friday, so it has won that back and a little more. Spot silver made its overnight high of $57.86 at 2:00 AM ET and has held most of the gain, while gold gave all of its rise back.
The gold/silver ratio (how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys) is 72.2, down from 73.1 at Friday’s close. A falling ratio means silver is doing better than gold. The ratio is still in the upper part of its range of the past few weeks.

Gold and silver price levels we’re watching
| Level | Gold | Silver | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday’s high | $4,199.08 | $57.98 | Gold turned back just below $4,200 on Friday and has not reached it since |
| Overnight high | $4,190.42 | $57.86 | Gold traded above $4,190 in one 15-minute bar and did not close there |
| Thursday’s high | $4,177.46 | $57.53 | The pivot. Gold has closed every 15-minute bar below it since 3:45 AM ET; silver is back above it |
| Overnight low | $4,158.81 | $57.11 | Gold’s low came at 8:00 AM ET; silver’s was at Sunday’s reopen |
| Friday’s floor | $4,155 | $56.89 | Friday’s U.S.-session lows. No 15-minute close below it since the reopen |

Gold’s overnight range was about $32, against a typical day of about $59 over the past 23 sessions, so the morning has been quiet. Gold has now spent three sessions between roughly $4,147 and $4,199.
What the Fed is expected to do
Fed funds futures imply about 17% odds (roughly 1 in 6) that the Fed raises rates by a quarter point at its October 27–28 meeting, and about 83% that it holds at 3.75%–4.00%, as of 8:32 AM ET. That is little changed from Friday’s close. Futures price at least one hike by the December 9 meeting as likely, about 89%, up from about 86% at Friday’s close.
The 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, was 2.74% at Friday’s close, down 0.04 percentage point on the day and 0.13 point over the past week, according to the U.S. Treasury. Lower real rates reduce the cost of holding a metal that pays no interest.
Fed officials are in their quiet period and will not comment on policy until the decision on Wednesday, Oct 28. Abroad, the European Central Bank’s President Christine Lagarde said in a statement to the IMF on Saturday that euro-area inflation was 3.8% in September and that the energy shock is “too large to ‘look through'”, while a measured response remains appropriate. In China, the National Bureau of Statistics reported third-quarter growth of 4.5% from a year earlier on Sunday evening; gold barely moved on it.

What today’s move means if you buy physical gold or silver

- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price today?
Before the New York open, Ausecure’s gold ask was $4,168.10 an ounce at 8:40 AM ET on Oct 19, 2026, down $1.50 (0.04%) from Friday’s closing ask of $4,169.60. Spot reached $4,190.42 overnight. For the current bid and ask, see our live metal prices page.
Why did gold rise overnight and then fall back?
Gold climbed from $4,167.55 at Sunday’s 6:00 PM ET reopen to $4,190.42 at 3:30 AM ET while Brent crude eased from $109.65 to $106.82. After that the dollar index rose to 102.08, Brent recovered above $108 and the 2-year Treasury yield rose to 4.75%, and spot gold slipped back to about $4,161.
Why is silver up when gold is flat?
Silver held most of its overnight gain, reaching $57.86 spot at 2:00 AM ET, while gold gave its gain back. Our silver ask is $57.72, up 1.0% from Friday’s close, after a 0.75% drop on Friday. The gold/silver ratio fell to 72.2 from 73.1.
What could move gold this week?
The Fed is in its quiet period, so there are no Fed speeches before the Oct 27–28 meeting. Oil and the dollar are the main drivers, with weekly jobless claims on Thursday and the flash business surveys and University of Michigan inflation expectations on Friday. On the chart, $4,190–$4,200 above and $4,155 below are the levels in play.
Is a flat Monday after a choppy week a good time to buy gold?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows or highs. Gold has spent three sessions between about $4,147 and $4,199. Some buyers wait for a move out of a range like this; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
