Why did gold bounce this afternoon?

Gold hit its low of the day, $4,066.54, around 8:45 AM ET, just after the morning selloff we covered in our pre-market note. From there it recovered to about $4,111 by the close. The biggest change was in bonds: the 10-year Treasury yield, which touched 5.365% this morning, fell back to 5.286%, roughly where it ended Tuesday. The 2-year yield ended down about 3 basis points.

Lower yields reduce the cost of holding a metal that pays no interest, and that took pressure off gold. The dollar also slipped from its morning high, though it still finished 0.42% higher on the day.

The bounce had limits. Gold stalled at $4,127, just above the $4,120 shelf where it traded before this morning’s drop, and never closed a 15-minute bar above it. It drifted back to $4,104–$4,111 into the close.

What did the Fed minutes say?

Minutes from the Fed’s September 15–16 meeting, released at 2:00 PM ET, confirmed that the quarter-point hike to 3.75%–4.00% passed 12–0. Most participants said another increase would likely be appropriate by year-end. Many described a higher rate path as insurance against inflation staying above target, while a number said it was needed based on their economic outlook. Officials also pointed to higher oil and fuel prices tied to the Middle East conflict as a source of price pressure.

Markets had expected a hawkish tone. The 2-year yield moved about 1 basis point, the dollar was flat, and gold traded $4,110, then $4,113, then $4,104 in the bars right after the release. Late in the day the CME FedWatch tool showed an 80.6% chance the Fed holds at its October 27–28 meeting and a 19.4% chance of a hike, slightly lower hike odds than this morning’s 21.6%.

How much of today’s drop was the dollar?

Most of it, by our estimate. Based on how gold has moved against the dollar over the past two weeks, the dollar’s 0.42% gain accounts for about 0.8 percentage points of gold’s 1.3% decline. Gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) fell about 0.8% on the day, a smaller drop than the 1.4% it showed at 8:35 AM ET.

Oil, Hormuz and the rest of the day’s news

  • Oil: the EIA reported that U.S. commercial crude inventories fell about 3.2 million barrels in the week ended Oct 2, while forecasts had called for a build of roughly 1.7 to 1.9 million barrels. Brent held near $101 a barrel.
  • Strait of Hormuz: reports of Iranian attacks on tankers continued. UK Maritime Trade Operations has reported nine incidents so far in October, according to Trading Economics.
  • Central banks: China’s central bank reported a 23rd consecutive month of gold purchases in September, a steady source of background demand.

Silver price today: a bounce, but still down 2.5%

Silver fell to $58.99 this morning, then recovered to about $59.79. It never closed a 15-minute bar below $59. The gold/silver ratio eased from 69.0 this morning to 68.8, still near the top of its two-week range (91st percentile).

Mining shares didn’t join the rebound. The ratio of gold miners to gold (GDX/GLD) ended near its lowest level in two weeks, and junior silver miners lagged silver as well. Miners sometimes move ahead of the metal, so this is one reason to be cautious about reading too much into one afternoon’s bounce.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver

Gold traded a $104 range today. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:

  • Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so an order placed tonight or tomorrow uses that moment’s price.
  • Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms.
  • Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
  • Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
  • Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Is a down day a good time to buy gold?

We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows. Some buyers add on down days; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
