The short version

  • How gold closed today: $4,144.70 an ounce (Ausecure’s ask at the 5:00 PM ET close), down $24.90 (0.6%) from Friday’s close of $4,169.60 and down $23.40 from our 8:40 AM ET price of $4,168.10. Spot’s range since Sunday evening was $4,136.60 to $4,190.42.

  • After the open: gold fell $18 in the first 45 minutes of U.S. trading, then made its first 15-minute close below $4,143 at noon ET as Brent crude rose to $110.70.

Why did gold fall after the open?

Gold came into the U.S. session near $4,162, roughly where our pre-market note left it. It dropped from $4,161.80 at 9:30 AM ET to $4,143.90 by 10:15 AM ET (9:15 AM CT), on the heaviest trading of the day, about 2.8 times normal 15-minute volume. The dollar index rose only 0.1% in that window and Treasury yields were flat, and we did not find a headline that explains the drop. U.S. stocks opened higher.

The second leg came with oil. Brent crude rose from $108.44 at 11:30 AM ET to $110.70 at 1:45 PM ET, above Friday’s $110 high, and the 2-year Treasury yield, the one most tied to Fed policy, rose to 4.78% at 12:15 PM ET. Gold made its first 15-minute close below $4,143 at noon ET and its low of $4,136.60 at 1:15 PM ET. Higher oil has meant higher inflation worries and more Fed hike bets, and gold has fallen with it on recent escalation days.

The afternoon was quiet. Brent eased back to about $109 and gold traded between $4,137 and $4,149 on light volume, finishing at $4,140.81 on spot.

How much of today’s move was the dollar?

Less than half. The U.S. dollar index rose 0.20% on the day to 101.98. Based on how gold has traded against the dollar since Friday’s close, that would point to a gold loss of about 0.2%. Gold fell 0.6% on spot, so about 0.4 percentage point was selling in gold itself.

The split matters for the read. Overnight, gold moved with oil and the dollar, as our pre-market note showed. After 9:30 AM ET most of the drop came with little dollar movement, first at the open and then alongside oil and the 2-year yield.

Oil, yields, stocks and the rest of the day’s news

  • Oil: Brent reached $110.70 at 1:45 PM ET and ended near $109.15, about 0.4% lower on the day after a $106.82 low overnight. We could not confirm the cause of the afternoon rise from official sources by the close.
  • Real yields: the 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, rose to 2.80% from 2.74% on Friday, according to Treasury data. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.14% and the 30-year to 5.48%, up 0.05 percentage point. Higher real yields raise the cost of holding gold, which pays no interest.
  • Mortgage rates: the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.40% in Freddie Mac’s latest weekly survey (Oct 15), unchanged from a week earlier and up 0.45 percentage point in four weeks. The 15-year averaged 6.71%. The next survey comes out Thursday, after today’s rise in long-term Treasury yields.
  • Rate odds: fed funds futures imply about an 18% chance of a quarter-point hike at the Oct 28 meeting, up from 17% at Friday’s close, as of 5:00 PM ET. For the Dec 9 meeting they price at least one hike at about 92%, up from 86% on Friday. Fed officials are in their quiet period before the meeting and made no policy remarks today.
  • Data: Canada’s consumer prices rose 3.1% from a year earlier in September, up from 3.0% in August, led by gasoline, according to Statistics Canada. The U.S. homebuilder index fell 3 points to 29 in October, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Neither moved gold.
  • Stocks: the S&P 500 closed up 0.4% and the Nasdaq up 1.1%, with chip stocks up 1.6% after Friday’s sell-off. The VIX volatility index fell to 18.4, so there was no flight to safety to support gold.
  • China property: sales of new homes and other new buildings in China fell 13.9% by value (5,379.9 billion yuan) in the first nine months of 2026 from a year earlier, and real-estate investment fell 20.6%, while resale-home transactions rose 10.7% by floor space, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics. The figures came out Sunday evening with third-quarter growth of 4.5% and did not move gold.
  • Mining shares: gold miners fell 0.8% against gold (GDX/GLD) and junior silver miners fell 0.9% against silver (SILJ/SLV), so miners did not cushion the metals’ move.

Ausecure’s Peter Thomas on CNBC Arabia

Peter Thomas, Ausecure’s chairman, spoke live from Chicago on CNBC Arabia’s World Bourses at 10:07 AM ET, with gold near $4,147 after the drop at the open. His main points:

Peter Thomas live on CNBC Arabia's World Bourses next to a gold price chart, Oct 19, 2026
Peter Thomas on CNBC Arabia, Oct 19, 2026. The interview aired in Arabic. Image: CNBC Arabia.
  • No direction until the Fed: there is no news to move gold, and traders are waiting on the Oct 28 rate decision. He sees $4,000 as the level that matters.
  • Both a haven and a rate trade: gold moves on physical supply, investment demand and monetary policy. In China, a weaker yuan has pushed buyers into gold, from the central bank to retail.
  • Record inflows, little coverage: gold funds took in a record US$31bn in the third quarter, according to the World Gold Council.
  • Holding up against a firm dollar: central banks have been steady buyers for a year and a half, taking metal off the market.

Silver price today: up 0.2%

Silver ended at $57.23 on our ask, up $0.10 from Friday. On spot it rose from $56.97 at Friday’s close to a high of $57.86 at 2:00 AM ET, then gave back most of that and finished at $57.11, with a low of $57.03 at 4:00 PM ET. It stayed above Friday’s low of $56.89 all day.

Silver held up better than gold for a second session. The gold/silver ratio fell from 73.1 to 72.5, which means an ounce of gold now buys about 72.5 ounces of silver.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver

Gold is about $25 lower than Friday’s close and below the floor it held for three sessions, while silver is slightly higher. Oil headlines from the Gulf moved metals today and may do so again before the Fed meets. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:

  • Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so an order placed tonight uses that moment’s price, not today’s close.
  • Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms. With the ratio near 72.5, silver is a little dearer against gold than it was on Friday.
  • Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
  • Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
  • Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions

How did gold close today?

Gold closed Oct 19, 2026 at $4,144.70 an ounce on Ausecure’s ask at 5:00 PM ET, down $24.90 (0.6%) from Friday’s $4,169.60. Spot ranged from $4,136.60 to $4,190.42 since Sunday evening; the high came overnight and the low at 1:15 PM ET.

Why did gold fall today while stocks rose?

Gold dropped about $18 in the first 45 minutes of U.S. trading with little change in the dollar or yields, then fell further as Brent crude rose to $110.70 and the 2-year Treasury yield rose to 4.78%. Stocks rallied and the VIX fell to 18.4, so there was no safe-haven buying to offset it.

Did oil move gold today?

Yes, in the afternoon. Brent rose from $108.44 at 11:30 AM ET to $110.70 at 1:45 PM ET, and gold fell to its $4,136.60 low over the same stretch. Overnight the reverse happened: Brent fell to $106.82 and gold rose to $4,190.42.

What are the odds of a Fed rate hike on Oct 28?

Fed funds futures imply about an 18% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 and an 82% chance of no change, as of 5:00 PM ET. Futures price at least one hike by the Dec 9 meeting at about 92%, up from 86% at Friday’s close.

Is a 0.6% drop a good time to buy gold?

We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows, especially with oil headlines moving prices. Some buyers wait for pullbacks; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
