Precious metals, explained
Plain answers to the questions new buyers ask most. No hype.
Shop live inventoryWhy own physical metal instead of futures, ETFs or mining stocks?
Physical bullion is an asset you own outright and can hold, with no counterparty, fund manager or company between you and the metal. Futures, ETFs and stocks can be useful tools, but they are claims on metal, not the metal itself.
Is gold money?
Gold pays no dividend or interest and isn’t used for everyday purchases, so it isn’t money in the modern sense. It has, however, served as a store of value for thousands of years, which is why many people hold it as insurance for their wealth.
Are precious metals a hedge against inflation?
Many people hold them for that reason. Over long periods, precious metals have tended to preserve purchasing power as paper currencies lose value to inflation, though prices can be volatile in the short term.
What’s the difference between bullion and numismatic coins?
Bullion is priced close to the value of its metal content. Numismatic coins carry an extra premium for rarity, condition or collector demand. For a 1 oz gold coin, that premium is roughly its market price minus the spot value of one ounce of gold.
What is a troy ounce?
The standard unit for weighing precious metals. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than an everyday ounce (28.35 grams). The name traces back to the market town of Troyes, France.
What makes a metal “precious”?
Precious metals are rare, naturally occurring elements with high economic value. The best known are gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Rhodium, iridium and ruthenium belong to the same family of platinum-group metals.
What is platinum used for?
Catalytic converters and fine jewelry are its two largest uses. Platinum is also used in oil refining, chemicals, electronics, medical devices and hydrogen fuel cells.
What is palladium used for?
Mostly catalytic converters, where it helps clean exhaust from gasoline engines; the auto industry is its largest source of demand. It’s also used in electronics, dentistry, chemical processing and water treatment.
What is rhodium?
One of the rarest precious metals: a platinum-group metal used mainly in catalytic converters. Its small market makes its price especially volatile.
