Gold Closes Up 1.6% at $4,174.90 as Yields Fall Despite Hot Producer Prices
Producer prices came in far above forecast this morning, yet Treasury yields and the dollar fell and gold held its overnight gains. A late-afternoon push took gold to its best level since Tuesday. Silver rose 3.2%. Here’s how metals closed, the levels in play, and what’s next before Fed Chair Warsh speaks tonight.

The short version
- How gold closed today: $4,174.90 an ounce (Ausecure’s ask at the 5:00 PM ET close), up $65.40 (1.6%) from Wednesday’s close of $4,109.50 and up $18.00 from our 8:41 AM ET price of $4,156.90. Spot’s range since Wednesday evening was $4,099.89 to $4,177.46.
- Silver price today: $57.56, up $1.79 (3.2%) and $0.66 higher than this morning. The gold/silver ratio fell to about 72.6 from 73.8 on Wednesday.
- After the open: every 15-minute close after 9:30 AM ET stayed above $4,143. Gold then broke above its overnight high of $4,161 at 3:30 PM ET and reached $4,177.46.
- The Fed: fed funds futures imply about a 28% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 as of 4:50 PM ET, and price a hike by the Dec 9 meeting as very likely (about 89%).
Why did gold hold up after hot producer prices?
The September producer price index came in well above forecast at 8:30 AM ET (7:30 AM CT), as we covered in our pre-market note. Prices rose 1.3% for the month against a 0.6% forecast, and core prices rose 0.7% against 0.3%. Retail sales also beat, rising 0.8% against 0.3%. Gold dipped to $4,130.24 in the 15 minutes after the release and was back near $4,155 within half an hour.
Bond traders did not treat the report as a reason for the Fed to move faster. The 2-year Treasury yield, the one most tied to Fed policy, fell to 4.68% an hour after the data and finished at 4.75%, down from 4.81% on Wednesday. The 10-year yield ended at 5.06%, down 0.13 percentage point on the day. FXStreet described the hot reading as already priced in after Wednesday’s consumer price report.
Gold then traded sideways for most of the day, with a low of $4,143.77 at noon ET. Late in the session it moved higher: from $4,159 at 3:15 PM ET to $4,175.64 by 4:00 PM ET, on the heaviest afternoon volume of the day. The dollar and yields barely moved in those 30 minutes, and we did not find a headline that explains the push.
Gold spot (XAU/USD), past two weeks
How much of today’s move was the dollar?
About half. The U.S. dollar index fell 0.50% on the day to 102.01. Based on how gold has traded against the dollar since Wednesday’s close, that would point to a gold gain of about 0.55%. Gold rose 1.6% on spot, so about one percentage point was buying in gold itself.
The split changed during the day. The overnight rise came mostly with the weaker dollar, as our pre-market note showed. The afternoon gain did not: the dollar index was little changed after 12:00 PM ET while gold rose about $27. Gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) finished the day 1.1% higher.

Fed speakers, oil, stocks and the rest of the day’s news
- Fed speakers: no Fed official published remarks on rates during the U.S. session, and the Fed’s weekly balance sheet showed nothing new for policy. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack took part in a question-and-answer session at 4:30 PM ET; her comments were not available when this note was written. Fed Chair Warsh speaks tonight, his last scheduled appearance before the pre-meeting quiet period begins Saturday.
- Real yields: the 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, fell to 2.78% from 2.84% on Wednesday, according to Treasury data. Lower real yields reduce the cost of holding gold, which pays no interest.
- Central bank buying: China’s central bank added 23 tonnes of gold in September, its largest monthly addition since October 2023, bringing its third-quarter buying to 63 tonnes, according to the World Gold Council. Chinese gold ETF holdings reached a record 304 tonnes.
- Rate odds: fed funds futures imply about a 28% chance of a quarter-point hike at the Oct 28 meeting and a 72% chance of no change, as of 4:50 PM ET. For the Dec 9 meeting they price a hike as very likely, about 89% for at least one quarter-point increase by then.
- Oil: Brent crude fell to $103.37 early Thursday and recovered to $105.65 by 5:00 PM ET, down 0.4% on the day. Oil was not today’s driver.
- Stocks: the S&P 500 closed up 0.3% and the Dow up 1.1%, but chip stocks fell 0.9% after Japan’s Nikkei dropped 4.9% overnight. The VIX volatility index stayed low at 16.5, so this was not a broad flight to safety.
- Mining shares: gold miners rose 2.4% against gold (GDX/GLD), up from their weakest level in our three-week data on Wednesday. Junior silver miners rose 0.3% against silver (SILJ/SLV).
Silver price today: up 3.2%
Silver ended at $57.56 on our ask, up $1.79. On spot it rose from $55.64 at Wednesday’s close to $57.42, with a high of $57.53 at 4:00 PM ET. It made 20 of its 30 15-minute closes after 9:30 AM ET above $57.00.
Silver rose about twice as much as gold, which reversed part of Wednesday’s split. The gold/silver ratio fell from 73.8 to 72.6, which means an ounce of gold now buys about 73 ounces of silver, down from about 74 on Wednesday.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver
Gold is back above where it was before Wednesday’s inflation report, and silver has recovered about half of Wednesday’s drop. The Fed Chair’s remarks tonight could move both before Friday’s open. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:
- Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so an order placed tonight, or after the Chair’s remarks, uses that moment’s price.
- Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms. With the ratio near 73, an ounce of gold costs about one ounce of silver less than it did on Wednesday.
- Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.
Auto-Buy places a recurring order for American Eagles or a 10 oz silver bar, weekly to every two months, priced at the live market on each order date. Every Auto-Buy order ships free and insured, you get a reminder before each one, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime.

Frequently asked questions
How did gold close today?
Gold closed Oct 15, 2026 at $4,174.90 an ounce on Ausecure’s ask at 5:00 PM ET, up $65.40 (1.6%) from Wednesday’s $4,109.50. Spot ranged from $4,099.89 to $4,177.46 since Wednesday evening, and the high came in the last hour of the session.
Why did gold rise after a hot producer price report?
Producer prices rose 1.3% in September against a 0.6% forecast, but Treasury yields fell after the release instead of rising. The 2-year yield dropped to 4.68% and the dollar index finished down 0.5%. Lower yields and a weaker dollar both tend to support gold, which pays no interest.
Has gold made back its CPI-day loss?
Yes. Gold closed Wednesday at $4,109.50 on our ask after the consumer price report and closed Thursday at $4,174.90, above Tuesday’s pre-report close of $4,165.20. On spot it closed above Wednesday morning’s overnight high of $4,161.
What are the odds of a Fed rate hike on Oct 28 after today’s data?
Fed funds futures imply about a 28% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 and a 72% chance of no change, as of 4:50 PM ET. Futures price a hike by the Dec 9 meeting as very likely, about 89%. Fed Chair Warsh speaks tonight at 11:30 PM ET.
Is a 1.6% rise a good time to buy gold?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term highs or lows, especially with the Fed Chair speaking tonight. Some buyers wait for pullbacks; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
