Gold Closes Up 0.4% at $4,145.30 After a Saudi Oil-Field Attack Briefly Sent It to $4,105
A drone attack at a Saudi oil field pushed oil and Treasury yields up this afternoon, and gold fell $33 in 30 minutes. Buyers stepped in within the hour, and gold finished at its high of the day. Silver ended flat. Here’s how metals closed, the levels in play, and what’s next.

The short version
- How gold closed today: $4,145.30 an ounce (Ausecure’s ask at the 5:00 PM ET close), up $16.20 (0.4%) from Tuesday’s close of $4,129.10 and up $11.50 from our 8:31 AM ET price of $4,133.80. Spot’s range since Tuesday evening was $4,105.03 to $4,142.23.
- Silver price today: $58.10, down $0.03 from Tuesday and $0.57 higher than this morning. The gold/silver ratio ended near 71.4, from 71.1 on Tuesday.
- The main event: between 2:45 and 3:15 PM ET, gold fell $33.50 to $4,105.03 as Brent crude jumped above $110 and the 2-year Treasury yield rose to 4.83%. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry said a drone aimed at its Shaybah oil field was intercepted and debris killed two workers. Gold won back the drop within the hour.
- The Fed: fed funds futures imply about a 13% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 as of 4:51 PM ET, down from about 17% at Tuesday’s close, and price a hike by the Dec 9 meeting as very likely (about 89%).
Why did gold drop $33 and then recover?
Gold was at $4,133.80 on our ask at 8:31 AM ET, as we covered in our pre-market note. The morning followed oil. Gold slipped to $4,121.56 by 10:00 AM ET as Brent crude rose above $109 and the 2-year yield climbed to 4.79%, then rose $11.70 at 11:15 AM ET when Brent fell back to about $108.50. It spent the middle of the day between $4,127 and $4,141.
At 2:45 PM ET (1:45 PM CT), the moves came together. In 30 minutes Brent jumped from $108.84 to $110.07, the 2-year yield rose from 4.79% to 4.83%, the 10-year from 5.12% to 5.14%, and the dollar index rose 0.1%. Gold fell from $4,138.54 to $4,105.03, the 15-minute bar to 3:15 PM ET traded about three times the normal volume, and silver dropped to $56.94. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry, via the Saudi Press Agency, said air defenses intercepted a drone aimed at a processing facility at the Shaybah oil field. Debris killed two foreign workers and injured two, and operations were not affected. The ministry did not say who launched the drone, and we could not confirm exactly when the first reports came out.
The drop did not hold. No 15-minute bar closed below Tuesday’s low of $4,111.68, and by 3:45 PM ET gold was back above $4,133. Oil eased toward $109.50, the 2-year yield settled near 4.81%, and gold finished at its high of the day, $4,142.23 on spot in the last bar before the 5:00 PM ET break. It was the second time since Tuesday evening that gold dipped below Tuesday’s low and was bought back quickly.
Gold spot (XAU/USD), past two weeks
How much of today’s move was the dollar?
Very little. The U.S. dollar index ended at 101.70, unchanged from Tuesday’s close, while gold rose 0.38% on spot. The gain came from gold itself.
Within the day the dollar did matter. Since 8:30 AM ET, gold and the dollar moved closely in opposite directions, mostly because of the afternoon shock, when oil, yields and the dollar all rose together and gold fell. When the dollar and yields eased, gold recovered. Gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) finished 0.35% higher since this morning.

A 20-year bond auction, oil, the Fed and the rest of the day’s news
- Treasury auction: the Treasury sold $13 billion of 20-year bonds at a high yield of 5.469%, the highest since the Treasury brought back the 20-year bond in 2020, with bids worth 2.73 times the amount offered, according to TreasuryDirect. Gold and the 10-year yield barely moved after the 1:00 PM ET result.
- Oil: Brent crude finished near $109.90, up about 1% from this morning, after topping $110 during the afternoon.
- The Fed: Fed officials are in their quiet period before the Oct 27–28 meeting, and no Fed releases or speeches touched on policy today. Fed funds futures imply about a 13% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 and an 87% chance of no change, as of 4:51 PM ET. For the Dec 9 meeting they price at least one quarter-point hike as very likely, about 89%, about the same as at Tuesday’s close.
- Yields: the 10-year Treasury yield ended near 5.12% and the 30-year near 5.41%, up 0.01 and down 0.01 point. The 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, slipped to 2.76% from 2.77% on Tuesday, according to Treasury data.
- Mortgage rates: the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.40% in Freddie Mac’s weekly survey (Oct 15), unchanged from a week earlier, and the 15-year averaged 6.71%. The new survey is out Thursday at 12:00 PM ET.
- Overseas: UK consumer prices rose 3.5% in the year to September, up from 3.1%, according to the Office for National Statistics. Gold did not react.
- Stocks: the S&P 500 closed up 0.6% and the Nasdaq up 1.1%. The VIX volatility index fell to 16.7, so there was no flight to safety to support gold.
- Mining shares: gold miners rose 0.4% against gold (GDX/GLD) and junior silver miners 0.2% against silver (SILJ/SLV).
Silver price today: flat after a round trip
Silver ended at $58.10 on our ask, $0.03 below Tuesday’s close. On spot it fell to $56.94 in the 3:00 PM ET bar, along with gold, then recovered 1.8% to close near $57.98. It has closed every 15-minute bar above $57.64 since 3:30 PM ET.
The gold/silver ratio ended near 71.4, which means an ounce of gold buys about 71.4 ounces of silver. That is up from 71.1 at Tuesday’s close and down from 71.9 this morning.
Gold/silver ratio, past two weeks
Gold and silver price levels after the close

| Pivot | $4,136.60 | $57.64 | Monday’s low for gold, the day’s pivot for silver; both closed above it into the close |
| Overnight low | $4,106.35 | $57.11 | Gold’s at 9:00 PM ET Tuesday, silver’s at 2:45 AM ET; both dipped below it this afternoon but neither closed a 15-minute bar below it |
| Today’s low | $4,105.03 | $56.94 | Both in the 3:00 PM ET bar, during the Saudi oil-field news |
Gold covered about $37 from high to low since Tuesday evening. Over the past few weeks the typical day covered about $59, and 80% of days stayed inside $80, so even with the afternoon drop it was a quieter day than usual.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver
Today gold fell $33 in half an hour on news from a Saudi oil field and recovered it within the hour. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:
- Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so an order placed during a fast drop or rebound uses that moment’s price.
- Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms. With the ratio near 71.4, an ounce of gold buys about the same amount of silver as it did on Tuesday.
- Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.
Auto-Buy places a recurring order for American Eagles or a 10 oz silver bar, weekly to every two months, priced at the live market on each order date. Every Auto-Buy order ships free and insured, you get a reminder before each one, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime.

No 15-minute bar closed below Tuesday’s low, and as oil and yields eased, gold climbed back above $4,133 by 3:45 PM ET.
Did today’s 20-year Treasury auction move gold?
No. The 20-year bonds sold at a high yield of 5.469%, the highest since the 20-year bond returned in 2020, but gold held near $4,132 and the 10-year yield near 5.11% in the half hour after the 1:00 PM ET result.

Is a quick drop like this afternoon’s a good time to buy gold?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows. Today’s drop lasted less than an hour. Some buyers wait for pullbacks; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
