- Silver price today: $57.57 on our ask, down $0.56 (0.96%), giving back part of Tuesday’s 1.6% gain. The gold/silver ratio rose to 71.9.
- Oil: Brent crude eased to about $108.6 at 8:30 AM ET, from $111.1 at 6:00 AM ET, and gold rose $25 over the same stretch.
- Fed: fed funds futures put the odds of an Oct 28 rate hike at about 13% at 8:31 AM ET, down from about 17% at Tuesday’s close.
- What’s next: gold has held between about $4,106 and $4,156 for two sessions. The 1:00 PM ET auction of 20-year Treasury bonds is today’s main test for yields.
Why is gold flat today?
Gold had a busy night that ended close to where it started. Spot slipped through Tuesday’s low of $4,111.68 at 9:00 PM ET and touched $4,106.35 on the heaviest 15 minutes of trading of the night, about three times a typical bar. It closed below $4,111.68 only once and was back near $4,117 within 15 minutes. We found no news report that explains the drop.
The recovery came in the early morning. From 6:00 to 7:45 AM ET gold rose about $25 to $4,139.93 and touched $4,141.99 at 8:00 AM ET, while Brent crude fell from about $111.1 to $109.2 and the 2-year Treasury yield eased from 4.80% to 4.78%. A market news site reported that Iran’s foreign minister said indirect talks with the U.S. through Pakistan and Qatar are continuing, while other reports said Iran rejected U.S. demands. None of this has been confirmed by either government. In recent weeks, lower oil has helped gold and higher oil has hurt it, and that pattern held again this morning. Gold eased back to about $4,130 by 8:30 AM ET.
UK consumer prices rose 3.5% in the year to September, above the 3.4% forecast and up from 3.1%, with motor fuels the largest upward push, according to the Office for National Statistics. The release at 2:00 AM ET (1:00 AM CT) did not move gold. Stocks were firmer but calm: S&P 500 futures were up 0.25% and Nasdaq 100 futures up 0.61% at 8:22 AM ET, and the VIX volatility index was 17.3.

How much was the dollar?
Almost none of it. The U.S. Dollar Index is at 101.71, up 0.01% since Tuesday afternoon, so the currency explains close to nothing of gold’s moves overnight. Gold moved with oil and short-term yields instead. Over the past two weeks gold is up about 1.0% and the dollar is down about 0.7%.
Longer-term yields were a little lower. The 10-year Treasury yield is 5.10% and the 30-year is 5.41%, each down about 0.01 to 0.02 percentage point since Tuesday afternoon, and the 2-year is 4.78%. Mortgage rates remain high: the average 30-year fixed rate was 7.40% in Freddie Mac’s weekly survey (Oct 15), unchanged from a week earlier, and the 15-year was 6.71%. The next survey is out Thursday.

Silver price today: down about 1%
Silver is at $57.57 on our ask, down $0.56 from Tuesday’s $58.13. Spot silver made its overnight high of $58.09 at 6:15 PM ET Tuesday and drifted lower through the night to $57.105 at 2:45 AM ET. It joined gold’s early-morning bounce but stalled near $57.66.
The gold/silver ratio (how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys) is 71.9, up from 71.1 at Tuesday’s close. Silver led on Tuesday and has given back about half of that lead overnight.

What the Fed is expected to do
Fed funds futures imply about 13% odds (roughly 1 in 8) that the Fed raises rates by a quarter point at its October 27–28 meeting, and about 87% that it holds at 3.75%–4.00%, as of 8:31 AM ET. At Tuesday’s close the hike odds were about 17%. Futures still price at least one hike by the December 9 meeting as likely, about 90%.
The 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, was 2.77% at Tuesday’s close, down 0.03 percentage point on the day, according to the U.S. Treasury. Lower real rates reduce the cost of holding a metal that pays no interest. The Fed is in its quiet period before the meeting; no Fed officials spoke overnight and none are scheduled today. The decision is due Wednesday, Oct 28, at 2:00 PM ET.

What today’s move means if you buy physical gold or silver
Gold is a few dollars above Tuesday’s close on our ask, and silver is about 56 cents lower after Tuesday’s rise. A few practical points:
- Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so the price you lock in is the one on screen when you place the order.
- Compare the premium over spot. Most products on our site show their “% over spot” under the price, so you can compare a coin with a bar on equal terms.
- Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price today?
Before the New York open, Ausecure’s gold ask was $4,131.40 an ounce at 8:39 AM ET on Oct 21, 2026, up $2.30 (0.06%) from Tuesday’s closing ask of $4,129.10. Spot fell to $4,106.35 at 9:00 PM ET Tuesday and reached $4,141.99 at 8:00 AM ET. For the current bid and ask, see our live metal prices page.
Why did gold drop to $4,106 last night?
We don’t know of a single cause. The drop came at 9:00 PM ET on about three times normal volume, with no news report we could tie to it, and gold was back above $4,111 within 15 minutes. It closed below Tuesday’s low in just one 15-minute bar.
Why did gold rise this morning?
It rose with falling oil and yields. Between 6:00 and 7:45 AM ET gold gained about $25 while Brent crude fell from about $111 to $109 and the 2-year Treasury yield eased to 4.78%. The dollar barely moved.
Why is silver down when gold is flat?
Silver gained 1.6% on Tuesday while gold slipped, and it has given back about half of that overnight. The gold/silver ratio rose from 71.1 at Tuesday’s close to 71.9.
Is a quiet morning a good time to buy gold?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows or highs. Gold has held a roughly $50 range for two sessions. Some buyers wait for a level to break; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
