Gold Closes Down 0.4% at $4,129.10 as Iran Talk Fades and Silver Rises 1.6%
An unverified report on Iran peace talks sent oil lower and gold up $22 in 15 minutes this morning. The gain faded once the report was disputed, and gold finished just below Monday’s close. Silver kept most of its rise. Here’s how metals closed, the levels in play, and what’s next.

The short version
- How gold closed today: $4,129.10 an ounce (Ausecure’s ask at the 5:00 PM ET close), down $15.60 (0.4%) from Monday’s close of $4,144.70 and up $11.20 from our 8:39 AM ET price of $4,117.90. Spot’s range since Monday evening was $4,111.68 to $4,155.57.
- Silver price today: $58.13, up $0.90 (1.6%) and $1.19 higher than this morning. The gold/silver ratio fell to about 71.1 from 72.5 on Monday.
- The main event: at 10:15 AM ET an unverified report of a Qatar and Pakistan proposal to end the U.S.–Iran war pushed Brent crude down 2% and gold up $22.50 in 15 minutes. The move faded after the report was disputed.
- The Fed: fed funds futures imply about a 17% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 as of 4:50 PM ET, down from about 18% at Monday’s close, and price a hike by the Dec 9 meeting as very likely (about 89%).
Why did gold jump and then give it back?
Gold started the U.S. session near its overnight low, as we covered in our pre-market note. It touched $4,113.43 at 9:00 AM ET but never closed a 15-minute bar below the overnight low of $4,111.68.
At 10:15 AM ET (9:15 AM CT), the Arabic news outlet Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported, citing unnamed sources, that Qatar and Pakistan had put forward a compromise proposal to end the U.S.–Iran war. We could not verify the report. In the next 15 minutes Brent crude fell 2% to about $106, the dollar index slipped 0.2% and the 2-year Treasury yield fell to 4.74%. Gold rose $22.50 on the heaviest volume of the day and reached $4,155.57 at 10:30 AM ET.
Within two hours the move was gone. Bloomberg reported that a diplomat involved in the talks disputed that a deal was close, and Iran’s foreign ministry said the U.S. response to its proposal was incomplete. Brent climbed back above $108, the 2-year yield rose to 4.79% and gold slipped to about $4,124 by 12:15 PM ET. It then held between $4,120 and $4,126 for the rest of the session.
The pattern matches recent weeks: signs of escalation in the Gulf push oil and rate-hike bets up and gold down, and signs of calm do the opposite.
Gold spot (XAU/USD), past two weeks
How much of today’s move was the dollar?
None of it. The U.S. dollar index fell 0.27% on the day to 101.71. Based on how gold has traded against the dollar since Monday’s close, that would point to a gold gain of about 0.5%. Gold fell 0.37% on spot instead, so about 0.9 percentage point of weakness came from gold itself.
All of that gap came overnight, when gold fell while the dollar and yields eased. After the U.S. open, gold moved closely with the dollar: both swung on the Iran report, and after 8:30 AM ET the dollar explains nearly all of gold’s move. Gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) finished the day 0.65% lower.

Housing data, oil, the Fed and the rest of the day’s news
- Housing: pending home sales fell 7.3% in September and 11.3% from a year earlier, with all four regions lower, according to the National Association of Realtors. Earlier, housing starts fell 5.2% to an annual rate of 1.221 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Gold barely moved on either release.
- The Gulf: the UK Ministry of Defence said RAF Typhoon jets are flying defensive missions over Saudi Arabia after escalating Houthi attacks. An Iranian claim that mines set two tankers on fire near the Strait of Hormuz has not been confirmed. Brent finished near $109, little changed on the day after a high of $111.99 overnight.
- The Fed: Fed officials are in their quiet period before the Oct 27–28 meeting, and no Fed releases or speeches touched on policy today. Fed funds futures imply about a 17% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 and an 83% chance of no change, as of 4:50 PM ET. For the Dec 9 meeting they price at least one quarter-point hike as very likely, about 89%, down from about 92% at Monday’s close.
- Yields: the 10-year Treasury yield ended near 5.11% and the 30-year near 5.42%, down 0.03 and 0.05 point. The 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, fell to 2.77% from 2.80% on Monday, according to Treasury data.
- Mortgage rates: the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.40% in Freddie Mac’s weekly survey (Oct 15), unchanged from a week earlier, and the 15-year averaged 6.71%. The next survey is out Thursday.
- Stocks: the S&P 500 closed up 0.3% and the Dow up 1.0%, while the Nasdaq was flat. The VIX volatility index fell to 17.3, so there was no flight to safety to support gold.
- Mining shares: gold miners finished flat against gold (GDX/GLD). Junior silver miners fell 1.6% against silver (SILJ/SLV), so silver’s gain did not carry over to the miners.
Silver price today: up 1.6%
Silver ended at $58.13 on our ask, up $0.90. On spot it rose from $57.11 at Monday’s close to $58.00, with a high of $58.61 at 10:30 AM ET on the same Iran report. Unlike gold, silver kept most of the gain: 28 of its 33 15-minute closes after 8:30 AM ET were above $57.64.
The gold/silver ratio fell from 72.5 to 71.1, which means an ounce of gold now buys about 71 ounces of silver, down from about 72.5 on Monday. We did not find silver-specific news that explains the extra strength.
Gold/silver ratio, past two weeks
Gold and silver price levels after the close
| Level | Gold | Silver | What happened today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day’s high | $4,155.57 | $58.61 | Both at 10:30 AM ET on the Iran report; gold made no 15-minute close above $4,155 |
| Monday’s low | $4,136.60 | $57.03 | Gold closed above it only from 10:15 to 11:00 AM ET and is back below; silver dipped to $56.99 at 8:45 AM ET but has not closed below its level |
| Close (spot) | $4,125.47 | $58.00 | Last 15-minute bar before the 5:00 PM ET break |
| Overnight low | $4,111.68 | $56.38 | Gold’s at 6:00 AM ET, silver’s at 9:15 PM ET Monday; neither has closed below it |
Gold covered about $44 from high to low since Monday evening. Over the past few weeks the typical day covered about $60, and 80% of days stayed inside $80, so today was a quieter day than usual despite the headline.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver
Today showed how quickly a single headline on Iran can move gold by more than $20 and then take it back. Silver held its gain better than gold. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:
- Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so an order placed after a headline uses that moment’s price, not the price before it.
- Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms. With the ratio near 71, an ounce of gold buys about 1.4 fewer ounces of silver than it did on Monday.
- Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.
Auto-Buy places a recurring order for American Eagles or a 10 oz silver bar, weekly to every two months, priced at the live market on each order date. Every Auto-Buy order ships free and insured, you get a reminder before each one, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime.

Frequently asked questions
How did gold close today?
Gold closed Oct 20, 2026 at $4,129.10 an ounce on Ausecure’s ask at 5:00 PM ET, down $15.60 (0.4%) from Monday’s $4,144.70. Spot ranged from $4,111.68 to $4,155.57 since Monday evening, a narrower range than a typical day.
Why did gold jump at 10:15 AM ET and then fall back?
An unverified report said Qatar and Pakistan had proposed a compromise to end the U.S.–Iran war. Oil fell 2%, the dollar and the 2-year yield dipped, and gold rose $22.50 in 15 minutes to $4,155.57. After a diplomat disputed that a deal was close, oil and yields recovered and gold returned to about $4,124 by 12:15 PM ET.
Why did silver rise 1.6% while gold fell?
Silver rose with gold on the Iran report but kept most of its gain afterward, closing at $58.13 on our ask. We did not find silver-specific news behind it, and junior silver miners fell 1.6% against silver. The gold/silver ratio dropped to about 71.1 from 72.5.
What are the odds of a Fed rate hike on Oct 28?
Fed funds futures imply about a 17% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 and an 83% chance of no change, as of 4:50 PM ET. They price at least one hike by the Dec 9 meeting as very likely, about 89%. Fed officials are in their quiet period until the meeting.
Is a small down day like today a good time to buy gold?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows, especially when a single headline can move gold $20 in minutes. Some buyers wait for pullbacks; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
