The short version
- How gold closed today: $3,946.74 an ounce at the 5:00 PM ET close, up $71.10 (1.83%) from Friday’s $3,875.65. That is $3.38 above our 8:45 AM ET price.
- When it rose: $68 came before 8:45 AM ET. In New York gold reached $3,970.31 at 11:30 AM ET, 58 cents short of Friday’s U.S.-session high, then slid $31 into the afternoon.
- Why: oil. Brent crude settled at $104.77, down 7.6%, Reuters reported, after Iran’s president said the supreme leader had given the government authority for talks.
- Silver price today: $50.65, up $1.52 (3.09%). It led overnight but lagged in New York. The gold/silver ratio closed at 77.9, down from 78.9 on Friday.
- Data today: the ISM factory index beat forecasts at 55.5, but its prices index eased to 75.2. Construction spending fell 1.9%.
Why is gold up today?
Our pre-market note had gold at $3,943.37 at 8:45 AM ET, after a 15-minute jump at 8:35 AM ET. It flagged Friday’s U.S.-session high of $3,970.89 as the level above. Gold tested it and failed.
- Overnight and the 8:35 AM ET jump. Gold rose $67.72 by 8:45 AM ET, with oil falling each time. The state news agency ISNA reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian said the supreme leader “has granted the government some authority on dialogue.” The earliest timestamp we found for that report is 8:51 AM ET, after the jump started. It is the likely trigger, but we can’t confirm the timing.
- The stock open. Gold rose $16.50 to $3,964.45 between 9:30 and 10:00 AM ET. Volume in the first 15 minutes was 4.3 times normal. Brent kept falling.
- The 10:00 AM ET data. Gold fell $8.33 in the 15 minutes after the ISM report. The 2-year Treasury yield rose 0.015 point in the same bar.
- The high. Gold climbed back to $3,970.31 at 11:30 AM ET as Brent fell below $105. It did not close a 15-minute bar above Friday’s high.
- The afternoon slide. Gold fell $31 to $3,938.93 by 2:45 PM ET. In the same hours Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1.3% and the dollar index rose about 0.1. Volume was normal, and we found no headline. Gold then held between $3,938 and $3,951 into the close.
It wasn’t rates. The 2-year Treasury yield ended 0.03 point higher, the Treasury said. Fed funds futures put December hike odds at 70%, down from 72% at Friday’s close.

Today’s economic data and what it means
Three reports came out this morning. Factories grew faster than forecast, but price pressure eased.
| Report | Forecast | Actual | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Factory PMI | 56.0 | 54.9 | October final, 9:45 AM ET, S&P Global. Below the flash reading; September was 55.9 |
| ISM factories | 54.5 | 55.5 | October, 10:00 AM ET. Production was the highest since November 2021. Above 50 means growth |
| ISM prices | 77.2 | 75.2 | October, 10:00 AM ET. Prices factories pay; September was 77.9 |
| Construction | 0.4% | −1.9% | September spending, 10:00 AM ET, Census Bureau. August revised to about +2.0% |
- ISM manufacturing
- The Institute for Supply Management’s index rose to 55.5 from 54.5. Production rose to 59.0, the highest since November 2021. New orders were 55.5 and employment 52.4. ISM said the reading matches about 2.7% growth in the economy. Strong factories argue for a December hike. Gold fell $8.33 in the 15 minutes after the release.
- ISM prices
- The prices index fell to 75.2 from 77.9, below the 77.2 forecast. Factories are still paying sharply higher prices, but the pace eased. That leans the other way for the Fed.
- S&P Global PMI
- The final reading was 54.9, below the 56.0 flash. S&P Global said output prices rose at the fastest rate since September 2022. Its economist said that adds to the pressure on policymakers to raise rates further.
- Construction spending
- Spending fell 1.9% in September, the Census Bureau said, against a forecast rise of 0.4%. Home building fell 5.5%. August was revised up to about 2.0% from 0.9%.
- Treasury bills
- The 13-week bill sold at 4.040% with 2.88 bids for each dollar offered, and the 26-week at 4.150% with 2.89. The Treasury also cut its fourth-quarter borrowing estimate by $10 billion, to $618 billion.
What it adds up to: a mixed day for the Fed. December hike odds ended at 70%, down from 76% this morning; we did not capture them at the release. Next is JOLTS job openings on Tuesday, then Friday’s October jobs report.
How much was the dollar?
The U.S. Dollar Index closed at 101.80, down 0.16% from Friday. It held between 101.56 and 101.81 in U.S. hours and rose slowly through the afternoon. Over the past two weeks gold is down 4.5% and the dollar 0.2%.
The 10-year Treasury yield was 4.92% and the 30-year 5.29% at the close, both down 0.02 point from Friday. The Treasury’s figures for today had the 10-year at 4.91%, the 30-year at 5.28% and the 2-year at 4.59%. The 10-year real yield rose 0.02 point to 2.62%. The 10-year breakeven, the bond market’s inflation gauge, fell 0.05 point to 2.29% as oil fell. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.24% in Freddie Mac’s weekly survey (Oct 29), down 0.08 point from a week earlier. The 15-year was 6.60%.

Trend check
On our monthly trend model, both metals have been in a bear reading since the end of October. Silver’s 12-month return turned positive today, so the model’s live reading for silver is now a correction: up over 12 months, down over one. It counts only if it holds to the Nov 30 month-end. Gold would need to rise about 5.4% to turn its 12-month return positive. Since 2002, gold rose in the month after a bear month 49% of the time; that is history, not a forecast.
What the Fed is expected to do next
Fed funds futures imply about 70% odds of a quarter-point hike at the December 9 meeting, as of 4:58 PM ET. That is down from 72% at Friday’s close and 76% this morning. The odds of a hike at the January 27 meeting itself are about 28%. Counting both meetings, futures price about 79% odds of at least one hike by January 27.
No Fed officials spoke on policy today. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee moderated a conference discussion, and we found no reported remarks on rates. The Fed’s survey of bank loan officers said banks tightened lending standards for small firms and for commercial real estate in the third quarter, and saw weaker loan demand. Minutes of the October meeting come out Nov 18. The next decision is December 9.

Frequently asked questions
How did gold close today?
Spot gold closed at $3,946.74 an ounce at 5:00 PM ET on Nov 2, 2026, up $71.10 (1.83%) from Friday. It traded between $3,891.26 and $3,970.31. For the current bid and ask, see our live metal prices page.
Why did gold rise today?
Oil fell 7.6% after Iran signalled it is ready to talk, and gold rose as oil fell, mostly before the U.S. open. Rates did not help: the 2-year yield rose 0.03 point. In New York gold stalled at Friday’s high and slid with tech stocks in the afternoon.
Why did silver lag gold in the afternoon?
Silver rose 4% overnight, more than twice gold’s gain, so it had more to give back. From 8:45 AM ET it fell 0.9% while gold added 0.1%. Silver mining shares lagged silver too. On the day silver still rose 3.1% against gold’s 1.8%.
Is it a good time to buy gold?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term moves. Gold got back about half of Friday’s fall, and this week brings the midterm elections, two likely rate hikes abroad and the jobs report. Some buyers add on dips; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot.
