Gold Closes Down 2.8% at $4,028.40 as Stop Orders and a Chip-Stock Sell-Off Hit Metals

Gold broke a two-day floor overnight and its October lows at the stock market open, and each break set off a wave of stop orders. Selling grew as chip stocks fell 6.7%, a pattern that fits funds raising cash. Silver fell 5.8%. Here is what moved metals, what the war news and oil did, and the levels in play.

The short version

  • How gold closed today: $4,028.40 an ounce (Ausecure’s ask at the 5:00 PM ET close), down $116.90 (2.8%) from Wednesday’s close of $4,145.30 and down $53.20 from our 8:32 AM ET price of $4,081.60. Spot’s low was $4,021.17 at 3:45 PM ET, below the October lows of $4,066.50 (Oct 7) and $4,073.50 (Oct 14).
  • Silver price today: $54.73, down $3.37 (5.8%) from Wednesday and $1.32 below this morning. The gold/silver ratio rose to about 73.7 from 71.4.
  • Why it fell: gold broke below $4,105 overnight and below its October lows at the 9:30 AM ET stock market open. Stop orders under those levels turned each break into a fast drop: $32 in 45 minutes after the open. The rest of the day it fell in step with chip stocks, a sign of funds selling gold to raise cash or meet possible margin calls.
  • Data today: U.S. jobless claims fell to 194,000 (forecast 200,000), according to the Labor Department. Gold rose for about half an hour afterward, so the report did not cause the drop.
  • The Fed: fed funds futures imply about a 6% chance of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 as of 5:02 PM ET, down from about 13% at Wednesday’s close, and about 77% odds of a hike by the Dec 9 meeting, down from about 89%.

Why is gold down today?

Gold was at $4,081.60 on our ask at 8:32 AM ET, as we covered in our pre-market note. Three things pushed it down from there to $4,028.40.

1. Stop orders under broken floors. Gold had held $4,105 for two sessions, so many traders had sell orders resting just below it. Gold closed below $4,105 at 11:15 PM ET Wednesday, and futures volume jumped to four to five times normal as those orders fired. The same thing happened at the 9:30 AM ET stock market open today. Gold went through its October lows of $4,073.50 (Oct 14) and $4,066.50 (Oct 7) and fell from $4,076.78 to $4,044.76 in 45 minutes, on about three times normal volume. The dollar index was flat in those minutes and Treasury yields edged lower, so the drop came from selling in gold itself.

2. Selling for cash during the tech sell-off. The Philadelphia semiconductor index closed down 6.7% and the Nasdaq Composite 2.6%, after stocks in Tokyo and Hong Kong fell about 3% overnight and China’s CSI 300 index fell into a bear market. Gold fell in step with stocks: from 12:30 to 1:00 PM ET it lost about $13, to $4,034.31, while Nasdaq futures fell 0.7%. When stock losses pile up, funds sell what is easy to sell, and gold is easy to sell and still up for the year. Some may have faced margin calls. HSBC Asset Management described this today: with a lot of borrowed money in gold, falling stocks trigger margin calls that force investors to sell gold. We can see the timing in prices; we can’t see who sold.

3. The rate picture helped gold and lost out to the selling. The 2-year Treasury yield fell 0.16 point, the 10-year TIPS yield fell 0.12 point to 2.64%, and fed funds futures cut the odds of an Oct 28 hike to about 6%. Lower rates usually lift gold. Today the selling was bigger.

Data today: initial jobless claims fell to 194,000 in the week to Oct 17, below the 200,000 forecast, and the prior week was revised up to 200,000, according to the Labor Department. Spot gold rose from $4,073.84 to $4,091.84 in the half hour after the 8:30 AM ET release, its high of the U.S. session.

What happened in the war, and did gold react?

  • Wed 8:03 PM ET: reports said the U.S. and Israel are preparing strikes on Iran after the U.S. midterm elections. Gold fell about $12 in the next hour.
  • Overnight: Reuters reported new Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia. At 4:11 AM ET, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it hit seven tankers near the Strait of Hormuz; no ships were named, and the U.S. military had called earlier Iranian mine claims false. Gold moved little on either report.
  • 11:47 AM ET: President Trump said on Truth Social that Iran is making up attacks in Hormuz to push oil prices higher. Gold was little changed.
  • 2:00 PM ET: Iran moved troops and artillery to its border with Iraq’s Kurdish region, according to regional media. Gold kept sliding slowly.

Escalation did not lift gold today. Gold gets a safe-haven bid when war news is what drives stocks lower. Today stocks fell on AI and chip news, and gold was sold with them.

Did oil affect gold?

Only a little. Brent crude rose from $109.76 at Wednesday’s close to about $113, roughly 3%, mostly between 12:45 and 4:45 AM ET as the Gulf attacks were reported. Gold mostly held between $4,080 and $4,105 during that climb. Oil also did not raise rate fears: Treasury yields fell 0.16 to 0.17 point and hike odds fell. U.S. crude ended near $99, roughly flat during New York hours.

What did the dollar do?

The dollar was a small help to gold today. The U.S. dollar index ended at 101.63, down 0.06% on the day. Since 8:30 AM ET gold and the dollar barely moved together. Gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) fell 1.23% since this morning, about the same as in dollars, so the drop was in gold itself.

Chip stocks, China, the Fed and yields

  • Stocks: the Philadelphia semiconductor index closed down 6.7% and the Nasdaq Composite down 2.6%. The S&P 500 fell 1.2%, the Dow ended flat, and the VIX volatility index rose to 19.0. Reported worries included a possible memory-chip glut, wider credit spreads at AI infrastructure companies, and Meta’s spending on AI.
  • China: the CSI 300 index entered a bear market, 20% below its June peak, led by chip and AI stocks. The yuan was steady all day. The People’s Bank of China is still buying gold: it reported a 23-tonne purchase in September, its largest monthly buying since October 2023, according to the World Gold Council. Shanghai silver prices stayed well above New York’s, so Chinese buyers were not the sellers today.
  • The Fed: Fed officials are in their quiet period before the Oct 27–28 meeting, and no Fed releases or speeches touched on policy today. Fed funds futures imply about a 94% chance of no change on Oct 28 as of 5:02 PM ET. They put the odds of at least one quarter-point hike by Dec 9 at about 77%, down from about 89% at Wednesday’s close.
  • Yields: the 10-year Treasury yield fell to 4.96% and the 30-year to 5.29%, down 0.17 and 0.13 point from Wednesday on Treasury’s daily curve, the lowest in about a month. The 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, fell to 2.64% from 2.76%, and the 5-year to 2.33% from 2.55%, according to Treasury data.
  • Mortgage rates: the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.32% in Freddie Mac’s new weekly survey (Oct 22), down from 7.40% a week earlier, and the 15-year averaged 6.68%.
  • Other data: the Kansas City Fed said manufacturing activity in its district “increased steadily” in October. Gold did not react to it or to the 10:00 AM ET leading economic index.
  • Mining shares: gold miners fell 3.2% against gold (GDX/GLD) and junior silver miners 1.6% against silver (SILJ/SLV), so mining shares were sold harder than the metals.

Why did silver fall twice as much as gold?

Silver ended at $54.73 on our ask, down $3.37 (5.8%), against gold’s 2.8% drop. It went through the same stop-order breaks as gold, at its own floors: spot fell from $55.95 at 9:00 AM ET to $55.00 by 10:00 AM ET, a 1.7% drop in the hour gold lost 1.1%. Its low was $54.49 at 4:15 PM ET. Silver also had its own hit. India allowed larger silver imports, and Reuters reported that silver premiums there fell to 45 cents an ounce from as much as $2.50 last week, which takes away one source of physical demand. Silver mining shares fell more than the metal.

The gold/silver ratio ended near 73.7, which means an ounce of gold buys about 73.7 ounces of silver. That is up from 71.4 at Wednesday’s close and 72.8 this morning, near the top of its range since late September.

Gold covered about $119 from high to low since Wednesday evening. Over the past few weeks the typical day covered about $60, and 80% of days stayed inside $80, so this was one of the widest days in our data. Gold has fallen $116.90 in one session on our ask.

Trend check: On our monthly trend model, gold and silver both ended September in a correction: the 12-month trend was still up (gold +4.2%, silver +25.3% after cash returns) while September itself fell. Since 2002, gold rose in the month after a correction month 60% of the time; history, not a forecast. After today’s drop, gold’s trailing 12-month return is −5.3% after cash returns: if October ended at today’s level, the model would read bear for gold, and gold would need to rise about 5.6% by Oct 30 to avoid that. Silver’s 12-month trend is still up.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver

Gold fell nearly $117 in a day and silver about $3.40, and both moved most around the stock market open. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:

  • Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so on a fast day like today an order placed at 9:30 AM ET and one placed at 3:30 PM ET could be priced about $50 an ounce apart in gold.
  • Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms. With the ratio near 73.7, an ounce of gold buys about 2.3 more ounces of silver than it did on Wednesday.
  • Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
  • Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
  • Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions

How did gold close today?

Gold closed Oct 22, 2026 at $4,028.40 an ounce on Ausecure’s ask at 5:00 PM ET, down $116.90 (2.8%) from Wednesday’s $4,145.30. Spot ranged from $4,140.07 Wednesday evening to $4,021.17 at 3:45 PM ET, below the October lows.

Why is gold down today if Treasury yields and the dollar fell?

Gold broke two levels many traders were watching, $4,105 overnight and its October lows at the 9:30 AM ET stock market open. Stop orders under those levels turned each break into a fast drop, including $32 in 45 minutes after the open. Then gold fell in step with chip stocks, which dropped 6.7%, a pattern that fits funds selling gold to raise cash or meet possible margin calls. Lower yields helped gold, but the selling was bigger.

Why did silver fall 5.8% when gold fell 2.8%?

Silver went through the same stop-order breaks and fund selling as gold, and it moves more on the same news. It also had its own hit: Reuters reported that India allowed larger silver imports and that Indian silver premiums fell to 45 cents an ounce from as much as $2.50 last week. The gold/silver ratio rose to about 73.7 from 71.4.

Did the war news or oil move gold today?

Not much. Reports of U.S.-Israeli strike plans at 8:03 PM ET Wednesday came with a $12 drop in gold. Gold barely moved on the overnight Gulf attacks or President Trump’s comments on Hormuz. Brent crude rose about 3%, mostly overnight, while gold held between $4,080 and $4,105.

Is a $117 drop like today’s a good time to buy gold?

We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows. Today’s drop came in steps through the day rather than in one move. Some buyers wait for the market to settle; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time it, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
