Gold Closes Up 1.5% at $4,198.50 but Stalls Below $4,200 as Silver Gains 2.8%

Gold finished the week’s last session higher, but it stopped at $4,208 and did not reach $4,200 on a close. Silver did better and reached $61.19. A soft consumer-sentiment reading and higher inflation expectations did not move gold off its highs. Here’s how metals closed, the levels in play, and what’s next.

The short version

  • How gold closed today: $4,198.50 an ounce (Ausecure’s ask at the 5:00 PM ET close), up $60.90 (1.5%) from our Thursday closing ask of $4,137.60. Spot gained about 0.3% after our 8:30 AM ET pre-market pull. The session’s range was $4,131.82 to $4,207.49.
  • Silver price today: $60.95 at the close, up $1.64 (2.8%) from Thursday’s $59.31 ask, after a high of $61.19. The gold/silver ratio is 68.9, down from 69.1 this morning.
  • The ceiling held: gold’s high for the session was $4,207.49, set in the overnight spike. Since our 8:30 AM ET pull it made three highs above $4,200 but no 15-minute close there, and it ended below $4,200. The $4,200 to $4,208 zone is the level to watch.
  • The 10:00 AM ET data: University of Michigan sentiment fell to 46.3 (forecast 47.6) and one-year inflation expectations rose to 4.7%. Gold stayed near the top of its range afterward.

Why did gold rise today?

Most of the gain came before the U.S. open. As we covered in our pre-market note, gold jumped overnight as oil eased after President Trump said the U.S. would not attack Iran before the November 3 midterms. The dollar also reached an overnight low, and gold touched $4,207.50 at 12:30 AM CT (1:30 AM ET).

Since then gold has mostly moved sideways. It traded between about $4,175 and $4,192 through the European morning and closed the 10:00 AM ET bar, when the Michigan survey came out, at $4,188.40. In the afternoon it made three 15-minute highs above $4,200, topping out at $4,202.18 at 2:45 PM ET (1:45 PM CT), but none of those bars closed above $4,200. At the 5:00 PM ET close our ask was $4,198.50. FXStreet described gold as range-bound for two weeks, recovering from a two-month low set on Wednesday, with about $4,200 as the top of that range.

The day’s main event: the Michigan survey

The University of Michigan’s preliminary October survey came out at 10:00 AM ET (9:00 AM CT). Consumer sentiment fell to 46.3, below the 47.6 economists expected and September’s 48.1. Year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7% from 4.6%, and five-year expectations rose to 3.5% from 3.4%. Both measures have now risen for two months and are at their highest since May, according to the University of Michigan.

It was a mixed print. Weaker sentiment points to a softer economy, while higher inflation expectations are what the Fed worries about with oil near $104. Gold did not react much either way, which suggests the market had already priced much of it.

The CME FedWatch tool put the chance that the Fed holds at its October 27–28 meeting at 82.8% and the chance of a hike at 17.2% as of 5:37 PM ET (4:37 PM CT). That is down from 19.4% hike odds at 8:20 AM ET and 17.7% at Thursday’s close, so rate-hike bets eased a little through the day.

How much was the dollar?

Very little this afternoon. Between our 8:30 AM ET pull and 4:45 PM ET, the dollar index slipped 0.05% to 102.23. Based on how gold has traded against the dollar today, that explains about 0.06 percentage points of gold’s 0.32% gain over the same stretch. The remaining 0.26 points came from something else. Gold priced against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) rose about 0.27%, so the afternoon gain was not just a weaker dollar. Over the full day the dollar index was up 0.1% from Thursday’s close, yet gold rose 1.5%.

Oil, Iran and the rest of the day’s news

  • Oil: Brent crude was near $104.40 a barrel after the close, up about 0.3% on the day, and WTI near $91.70, based on TradingView quotes at 5:30 PM ET. That is a little above the roughly $103 we noted this morning.
  • Iran: Trump said Thursday the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterms and called talks productive. The blockade of Iranian shipping stays. A live market blog reported an unverified claim by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard of a strike on a gas carrier in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Interest rates: The 10-year Treasury yield was 5.24% at 5:00 PM ET, up 1.1 basis points from Thursday’s close of 5.23%, after a high of 5.28% during the day. The 2-year yield was 4.79%, up from 4.76%.

For weeks, higher oil has meant higher yields and a weaker gold price. Today that link was loose: oil was firm and gold still finished higher.

Silver price today: up 2.8% and above this morning’s high

Silver closed at $60.95 on our ask after reaching $61.19 at 9:45 AM ET, clearing the $60.68 high it set before the open. The Oct 7 high of $61.50 is the next level above. The gold/silver ratio was 68.9 at the close, down from 69.1 this morning and 70.0 on Thursday. A falling ratio means silver is gaining on gold.

Mining shares joined in. The ratio of gold miners to gold (GDX/GLD) rose 1.4% to 0.2321 during the U.S. session, and the ratio of junior silver miners to silver (SILJ/SLV) rose 0.2% to 0.5002. Miners tend to lead lasting moves, so the gold-miner gain is a point in favor of this one, though silver miners lagged.

What today means if you buy physical gold or silver

Gold ended the week near the top of a two-week range. For buyers of coins and bars, the practical questions are what you pay over spot and when your price is set:

  • Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so an order placed this weekend or Monday uses that moment’s price.
  • Compare the premium over spot. Most products show their “% over spot” under the price, so a coin and a bar can be compared on equal terms.
  • Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
  • Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
  • Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions

How did gold close today?

Ausecure’s gold ask was $4,198.50 an ounce at the 5:00 PM ET close on Oct 9, 2026, up $60.90 (1.5%) from Thursday’s close. Spot traded between $4,131.82 and $4,207.49 in the session.

Why did gold go up today?

Most of the rise came overnight, when oil eased after President Trump said the U.S. would not attack Iran before the November midterms and the dollar touched an overnight low. Gold was at $4,188 after the 10:00 AM ET data and closed at $4,198.50 on our ask, after stopping at $4,207, just above the $4,200 round number.

What did the Michigan consumer survey show?

The preliminary October reading of consumer sentiment was 46.3, below the 47.6 forecast and down from 48.1. One-year inflation expectations rose to 4.7% from 4.6%, and five-year expectations rose to 3.5% from 3.4%.

What is the silver price today?

Ausecure’s silver ask was $60.95 at the 5:00 PM ET close on Oct 9, 2026, up $1.64 (2.8%), after a session high of $61.19 and a low of $59.26.

Is it a good time to buy gold after a rise like this?

We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term highs or lows. Some buyers wait for pullbacks; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
