Gold Price Today: Gold Edges Up 0.2% to $4,026 as Silver Lags After a Night Below $53
Silver fell below $53 during Asian trading while gold held near $4,000. Gold dipped to $3,989 in the London morning, its fifth test of that area since Thursday, then rose $22 in 20 minutes as oil and Treasury yields fell around Iranian peace-talk headlines. Spot gold is up 0.2% from Monday’s close and silver is down 0.7%, a day before the Fed’s decision.

This pre-market note uses spot prices as of 8:34 AM ET on Oct 27, 2026. For how gold finished Monday, read the market close note.
The short version
- Gold price today: spot gold is $4,025.93 an ounce at 8:34 AM ET, up $8.74 (0.22%) from Monday’s 5:00 PM ET close of $4,017.19. It is still down $139 (3.4%) from the Oct 16 close.
- The overnight low: gold slipped to $3,989.16 at 4:45 AM ET as the dollar and oil rose in the London morning. It was the fifth time since Thursday that buyers stepped in between $3,975 and $3,990.
- Silver price today: spot silver is $53.59, down $0.39 (0.72%). It fell from $54.24 to $52.67 during Asian trading and spent about two and a half hours below $53 before recovering. The gold/silver ratio rose to 75.1.
- Data: U.S. durable goods orders rose 1.8% in September, the Census Bureau said at 8:30 AM ET, and August was revised up to 0.1% from 0.0%. Excluding transportation, orders rose 0.5%. Gold barely moved on the release.
- Fed: fed funds futures put the odds of a rate hike at Wednesday’s Oct 28 decision at about 8%, down from about 9% at Monday’s close, and the odds of a hike on Dec 9 at about 79%, unchanged.
Why is gold up today?
Gold is up a little because buyers defended the $3,990 area again in the London morning, and then it jumped when oil and Treasury yields fell together. The dollar did not help: it is up 0.14% since Monday’s close.
- A quiet Asian session for gold. From Monday evening to about 2:00 AM ET, gold traded between $4,000 and $4,026, with heavier volume around the Asian open but no lasting move.
- A dip in the London morning. Between 2:00 and 4:45 AM ET, gold slid from about $4,008 to $3,989.16. In the same stretch the U.S. Dollar Index rose to 102.17, Brent crude rose about 1.4% to $111.7 and the 10-year Treasury yield edged up. That is the usual pressure on gold, and it lines up with this dip. Buyers stepped in just above Monday’s New York low of $3,988.83.
- A $22 jump in 20 minutes. From 6:30 AM ET, gold rose from $3,994.73 to $4,016.43 on about two and a half times normal volume. In the same minutes Brent fell about $1, the 10-year yield fell 0.02 point and the dollar eased. Iran’s Supreme Leader called for proposals on acceptable terms to end the war at 6:42 AM ET, a headline service reported, in the middle of the move; it had started 12 minutes earlier, and we could not pin the first minute to a single headline.
- More buying before the data. Gold added about $13 between 8:00 and 8:34 AM ET, as the dollar slipped, and was little changed after the 8:30 AM ET durable goods report.
Data this morning: durable goods orders rose 1.8% in September to $345.4 billion, the Census Bureau said, and August was revised to a 0.1% gain from flat. Orders excluding transportation rose 0.5%. Published forecasts for the headline varied widely, so we don’t call it a beat or a miss. The Conference Board’s consumer confidence index is due at 10:00 AM ET.
Stocks are calm: S&P 500 futures were up 0.36% at 8:21 AM ET and the VIX, Wall Street’s fear gauge, was 17.8. Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.7%, while Shanghai stocks fell 1.3%.

Iran, Saudi Arabia and oil: did gold react?
- Iran diplomacy (6:13 to 6:42 AM ET): an Iranian ambassador said Iran had proposed a seven-day plan to the U.S., Qatar said Iran must stop threats against Arab states and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s Supreme Leader called for proposals to end the war, a headline service reported. Gold’s 6:30 AM ET rise came as oil fell in the same minutes.
- Refinery claim (6:59 AM ET): Yemen’s Houthis claimed a missile strike that caused fires at Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery. Saudi Arabia and Aramco had not confirmed it. Gold and oil barely moved. Explosions were reported in Riyadh at 7:36 AM ET; Saudi civil defense said the danger had passed 15 minutes later. Gold rose about $3.
- Oil overall: Brent for January delivery is about $110.1, little changed from Monday afternoon, after rising as high as $111.9 in the London morning.
How much was the dollar?
It worked against gold, not for it. The U.S. Dollar Index is 102.16, up 0.14% since Monday’s close, after reaching 102.29 overnight. Measured over the night, the dollar’s rise should have cost gold about 0.2%; gold rose 0.2% instead. Over the past two weeks gold is down about 3.7% and the dollar is roughly flat.
The 10-year Treasury yield is 4.99% and the 30-year is 5.30%, both little changed from Monday’s close, while the 2-year rose slightly to 4.73%. Treasury’s Monday figures had the 10-year at 5.00% and the 30-year at 5.31%. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.32% in Freddie Mac’s weekly survey (Oct 22), down 0.08 point from a week earlier, and the 15-year was 6.68%. The next survey is Thursday.

Silver price today: down 0.7% after a night below $53
Spot silver is $53.59, down $0.39 from Monday’s close of $53.98. Unlike gold, silver fell during Asian trading: from $54.24 at 9:30 PM ET to $53.19 by 1:15 AM ET, while gold held steady and Treasury yields fell. Silver traded in Shanghai fell by about the same amount, so the selling was not limited to the U.S. market. A sharper drop at 1:30 AM ET, as Shanghai’s afternoon session opened, took silver to $52.72, and it reached $52.67 at 2:45 AM ET. Every 15-minute close from 2:15 to 4:45 AM ET was below $53. It has been back above $53 since 5:00 AM ET and rose with gold after 6:30 AM ET, but not all the way back.
The gold/silver ratio (how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys) is 75.1, up from 74.4 at Monday’s close near the highest in our past five weeks of 15-minute data. Silver is 5.9% below its Oct 16 close of $56.97, against gold’s 3.4%.
Gold/silver ratio, past two weeks
Gold/silver ratio: the levels
The ratio has climbed from 67.8 at the Oct 5 close to 75.1 now, which means silver has lost about 10% more than gold in three weeks. The biggest single step came last Thursday, Oct 22, when silver fell 5.8% and gold 2.8% during the tech-stock sell-off. Overnight it went through 75 for the first time in our data, just before 1:00 AM ET, and peaked at 75.86 as silver hit its low.
| Ratio level | Ratio | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight high | 75.86 | Made at 2:30 AM ET, with silver at its low. The highest in our 15-minute data, which starts Sep 23 |
| Round number | 75.0 | Crossed overnight. The ratio is just above it now |
| Monday’s close | 74.42 | Where today’s move started |
| Oct 22 close | 73.72 | After the day silver fell twice as much as gold |
| Oct 20 close | 71.13 | Last week’s lowest close, before the sell-off |
| Oct 5 close | 67.80 | October’s lowest close, when silver was keeping pace with gold |
For a longer view, using COMEX futures prices: the ratio last closed above 75 in late November 2025. Over the past year it has ranged from 44.2 (Jan 26, 2026) to 84.5 (Oct 28, 2025), with a middle value of 66, so today’s level is high for this year. Over five years the middle value is about 84, so it is still low by that measure. A falling ratio would mean silver is catching up with gold; a rising one, that it is still lagging.
Gold and silver price levels we’re watching
| Level | Gold | Silver | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday’s high | $4,034.09 | $54.27 | Gold’s high from Friday morning and silver’s Friday New York high. Neither has been touched since |
| Overnight high | $4,027.10 | $54.24 | Gold made it at 8:30 AM ET, after the data; silver at 9:30 PM ET Monday, before its slide |
| Round number | $4,000 | $53.00 | Gold closed below $4,000 in all but one 15-minute bar from 3:45 to 6:15 AM ET and has been above it since. Silver closed below $53 from 2:15 to 4:45 AM ET and has been above it since 5:00 AM ET |
| Monday’s low | $3,988.83 | $53.01 | Both made at the U.S. open Monday. Gold held above it overnight; silver fell through |
| Overnight low | $3,989.16 | $52.67 | Gold’s at 4:45 AM ET, the fifth test of $3,975 to $3,990 since Thursday; silver’s at 2:45 AM ET |
| Friday’s low | $3,975.65 | $53.03 | The bottom of gold’s zone, not tested since Friday. Silver traded below its Friday low overnight |
Gold’s overnight range was about $38, smaller than the typical day of about $57 over the past month.
Trend check: on our monthly trend model, both metals are in a correction: their 12-month trend, after cash returns, is still up and September was a down month (readings as of Sep 30). Since 2002, gold has risen in the month after a correction month about 60% of the time; that is history, not a forecast. With four trading days left in October, gold’s live reading is weaker: if the month ended at this level, the model would read bear for gold, and gold futures would need to rise about 6.6% by Oct 30 to avoid that. Silver’s live reading is still a correction.
What the Fed is expected to do on Wednesday
The Fed’s two-day meeting starts today. Fed funds futures imply about 8% odds (roughly 1 in 12) of a quarter-point hike on Wednesday and about 92% that it holds at 3.75%–4.00%, as of 8:20 AM ET, down from about 9% at Monday’s close. For the December 9 meeting, futures price a quarter-point hike at about 79%, unchanged from Monday’s close, and the odds of at least one hike by then at about 81%.
The 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, was 2.66% at Monday’s close, unchanged on the day and down 0.14 percentage point from a week earlier, according to the U.S. Treasury. Fed officials are in their quiet period, and no Fed releases or speeches came out overnight. The decision is due Wednesday, Oct 28, at 2:00 PM ET, with Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference at 2:30 PM ET. Our chairman Peter Thomas will discuss the decision on Asharq Bloomberg at 3:20 PM ET.
What markets will be watching:
- The hold is priced. With about 92% odds of no change, a hold on its own is not news. A hike, at about 8%, would be the surprise.
- December is the open question. Futures price a December hike at about 79%. Anything in the statement or Chair Warsh’s answers that moves that number would likely show up first in the 2-year Treasury yield and the dollar, which tend to weigh on gold when they rise.
- Dissents. A CNBC survey published this morning found most respondents expect at least two Fed voters to dissent from a hold.
- The Fed is not the only force. Last Thursday, Oct 22, gold fell 2.8% and silver 5.8% on a day when hike odds fell, the 10-year TIPS yield dropped 0.12 point and the dollar slipped. Gold moved with the sell-off in technology stocks instead. Oil and the Iran talks have also moved it this week.
Central banks: China keeps buying gold, Russia keeps selling
- China: the People’s Bank of China “reported a 23t gold purchase in September, the largest monthly buying since October 2023”, according to the World Gold Council. That brought its third-quarter buying to 63 tonnes and its holdings to 2,410 tonnes, 8.5% of its reserves. It was the 23rd straight month of purchases, and it kept buying while gold fell in September. October’s figure is due in early November.
- Chinese investors: Chinese gold ETFs grew by 11 tonnes in September, a third straight monthly rise, to a record 304 tonnes, the World Gold Council said. Physical buying was weaker: wholesale gold demand in China was 234 tonnes in the third quarter, down 21% from a year earlier.
- Russia: the Bank of Russia’s gold holdings fell to 72.8 million ounces (about 2,264 tonnes) at the start of October, the lowest since 2019, according to its reserve data. September’s drop was about 200,000 ounces (6.2 tonnes), the 10th straight monthly decline and about 62 tonnes since December 2025, as Russia covers a widening budget deficit.
- This morning: we found no sign of a China-specific bid overnight. Silver was sold during Asian trading, and silver in Shanghai fell by about as much as in New York. These official figures are monthly; they don’t explain a single day’s move.

What today’s move means if you buy physical gold or silver
Gold is holding just above $4,000, and silver is cheaper than it was on Monday after its overnight drop. The Fed decides tomorrow, and the last five sessions show how quickly prices can move around these levels. Our own ask at 8:37 AM ET was $4,031.00 for gold and $53.76 for silver. A few practical points:
- Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market. Silver moved more than $1.50 overnight, so the price you lock in is the one on screen when you place the order.
- Compare the premium over spot. Most products on our site show their “% over spot” under the price, so you can compare a coin with a bar on equal terms.
- Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.
Auto-Buy places a recurring order for American Eagles or a 10 oz silver bar, weekly to every two months, priced at the live market on each order date. Every Auto-Buy order ships free and insured, you get a reminder before each one, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price today?
Spot gold was $4,025.93 an ounce at 8:34 AM ET on Oct 27, 2026, up $8.74 (0.22%) from Monday’s 5:00 PM ET close of $4,017.19. Overnight it traded between $3,989.16 and $4,027.10. For the current bid and ask, see our live metal prices page.
Why is silver down while gold is up this morning?
Silver was sold during Asian trading, falling from $54.24 to $52.67, while gold held near $4,000 and Treasury yields fell. Silver in Shanghai fell by about the same amount. Gold’s gains came later, in the London and early New York morning, and silver recovered only part of its drop, so the gold/silver ratio rose to 75.1.
Did the reported attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery move gold?
No. The Houthis’ claim crossed at 6:59 AM ET and had not been confirmed by Saudi Arabia or Aramco. Gold was flat near $4,009 and Brent crude edged lower in the next 15 minutes.
What are the odds of a Fed rate hike this week?
As of 8:20 AM ET, fed funds futures put the odds of a quarter-point hike on Oct 28 at about 8%, down from about 9% at Monday’s close. A December 9 hike is priced at about 79%. The decision is due Wednesday at 2:00 PM ET.
Is silver’s drop below $53 a good time to buy?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows. Silver bounced back above $53 within three hours, but it is still 5.9% below its Oct 16 close, and the Fed decision on Wednesday could move it either way. Some buyers wait for prices to settle; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
