Gold Price Today: Gold Falls 1.7% to $4,093 as Hot Core Inflation Lifts Yields
September’s core inflation came in above forecasts, Treasury yields and the dollar jumped, and gold fell through the $4,143 level our desk had flagged. Here’s what moved metals before the New York open, the levels now in play, and what comes next this week.

This pre-market note uses Ausecure prices as of 9:06 AM ET on Oct 14, 2026. For how gold and silver finished Tuesday, read our market close note from last night.
The short version
- Gold price today: $4,092.50 an ounce on our ask at 9:06 AM ET, down $72.70 (1.7%) from Tuesday’s closing ask of $4,165.20. Spot fell as low as $4,083.01 just after 9:00 AM ET.
- Silver price today: $57.07 on our ask, down $2.24 (3.8%). Spot touched $56.84, its lowest level since at least Sep 23. The gold/silver ratio is 71.7.
- Why: core consumer prices rose 0.3% in September against a 0.2% forecast. In the first 15 minutes the 2-year Treasury yield rose about 0.16 percentage point, the 10-year about 0.12, and the dollar index 0.48%. CME FedWatch’s odds of an October rate hike rose from 21.6% to 49.3%.
- What’s next: gold has broken below $4,143, the bottom of last week’s breakout area, and last week’s $4,131.80 low. Producer prices and retail sales come Thursday at 8:30 AM ET, and Fed Chair Warsh speaks Thursday night.
Why is gold down today?
The September consumer price index, released at 8:30 AM ET (7:30 AM CT), was hotter than expected where it matters most for the Fed. Core prices, which leave out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month against a 0.2% forecast, and 2.6% from a year earlier against 2.5%. Headline prices rose 0.6% as expected, but the annual rate came in at 3.7%, above the 3.6% forecast and up from 3.4% in August.
Markets read that as more pressure on the Fed to raise rates again. In the 15 minutes after the release the 2-year Treasury yield, the one most tied to Fed policy, jumped from 4.78% to 4.94%. The 10-year rose from 5.19% to 5.31%. The dollar index climbed 0.48%. Gold fell from $4,153 to $4,093 in the same 15 minutes, a drop of 1.4%, touching $4,085.29 on heavy volume. Silver fell 1.7%.
Gold bounced to $4,107.69 in the next 15 minutes, then turned lower again and made a new low of $4,083.01 just after 9:00 AM ET. Since then the 2-year yield has held near 4.95% and the dollar index has kept rising, to 102.85.
Gold was already soft before the number. It slipped below $4,143 at 5:15 AM ET and spent most of the early European morning just under it, on light trading, while the dollar and oil were little changed. FXStreet described buyers holding back ahead of the data. Gold bounced to $4,155.80 in the hour before the report, then the release took it through the overnight low.
Gold spot (XAU/USD), past two weeks
How much was the dollar?
About two thirds of it. The U.S. Dollar Index is up 0.64% at 102.85 since Tuesday afternoon, nearly all of it since the CPI report. Based on how gold has traded against the dollar this week, that move alone would have cut gold by about 1.2%. Spot gold is down 1.8%, so the rest, about 0.6 percentage point, was selling in gold itself as rate expectations rose.
A second check: gold measured against a basket of major currencies (gold × DXY) is down 1.2% since Tuesday afternoon. Higher rate expectations pushed the dollar up and gold down at the same time.

Silver price today: falling faster than gold
Silver is at $57.07 on our ask, down $2.24 from Tuesday’s $59.31. Spot drifted lower overnight, fell 1.7% in the 15 minutes after the CPI report, and touched $56.84 just after 9:00 AM ET, its lowest level in our data back to Sep 23.
The gold/silver ratio (how many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys) is 71.7 on our prices, up from 70.2 at Tuesday’s close. On spot data it is at the top of its range of the past three weeks. A rising ratio means silver is weaker than gold, which is typical when the market prices in higher rates and a slower economy.

| Level | Gold | Silver | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broken level | $4,143 | $59.00 | Bottom of last week’s gold breakout area; eight 15-minute closes below it before the report |

| Post-report bounce high | $4,107.69 | $57.92 | Where the first rebound after the report stopped (8:45 AM ET) |
| Today’s low so far | $4,083.01 | $56.84 | Set just after 9:00 AM ET, below the CPI-bar low of $4,085.29 / $57.51 |
| Next support | $4,066.50 | — | The Oct 7 gold low. Silver has no tested level below $56.84 in our recent data |
Over the past 19 sessions a typical day for gold covered about $61 from high to low, and 80% of days stayed inside $80. Since Tuesday afternoon gold has already covered about $87, from $4,170.49 to $4,083.01, before the U.S. stock market has opened.
What the Fed is expected to do
According to CME FedWatch, futures markets now price a 49.3% chance that the Fed raises rates at its October 27–28 meeting and a 50.7% chance that it holds at 3.75%–4.00%, with no chance of a cut (as of 8:50 AM ET). Just before the report the hike odds were 21.6% (8:28 AM ET), and at Tuesday’s close 22.1%. That shift is what pushed the 2-year yield and the dollar higher.
The 10-year Treasury yield is 5.33% and the 2-year is 4.95%. The 10-year TIPS yield, a common measure of real interest rates, was last 2.91%. Higher real rates raise the cost of holding a metal that pays no interest, which keeps rates the main headwind for gold.

What today’s move means if you buy physical gold or silver
Gold is about 1.7% cheaper on our ask than at Tuesday’s close and silver about 3.8% cheaper. Days with a big data release can see prices move quickly, so a few practical points:
- Your price is confirmed when you order. Our prices follow the live market, so on a fast day the price you lock in is the one on screen when you place the order.
- Compare the premium over spot. Most products on our site show their “% over spot” under the price, so you can compare a coin with a bar on equal terms.
- Listed price or card price. Wire, paper check and crypto via Uphold pay the listed price. Credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay pay the card price. Domestic orders paid by wire qualify for free insured shipping.
- Buying for retirement? See which coins and bars meet the fineness rules on our IRA-eligible metals page.
- Selling? We make two-way markets. Call the desk at 1-855-528-4653 for a live bid, or see how selling works.
Auto-Buy places a recurring order for American Eagles or a 10 oz silver bar, weekly to every two months, priced at the live market on each order date. Every Auto-Buy order ships free and insured, you get a reminder before each one, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price today?
Before the New York open, Ausecure’s gold ask was $4,092.50 an ounce at 9:06 AM ET on Oct 14, 2026, down $72.70 (1.7%) from Tuesday’s closing ask of $4,165.20. Spot fell as low as $4,083.01 just after 9:00 AM ET. For the current bid and ask, see our live metal prices page.
Why did gold fall after the CPI report?
Core consumer prices rose 0.3% in September against a 0.2% forecast, and 2.6% from a year earlier against 2.5%. That raised expectations of another Fed rate hike: the 2-year Treasury yield jumped about 0.16 percentage point and the dollar index rose 0.48% within 15 minutes, and gold fell 1.4% in the same window. CME FedWatch’s hike odds for the Oct 28 meeting rose from 21.6% to 49.3%.
Did gold hold $4,143?
No. Gold first closed a 15-minute bar below $4,143 at 5:15 AM ET, before the report, and spent most of the European morning just under it. After the CPI release it also fell through last week’s $4,131.80 low and reached $4,083.01.
What data could move gold next?
U.S. producer prices and retail sales are due Thursday, Oct 15 at 8:30 AM ET (7:30 AM CT), and Fed Chair Warsh speaks Thursday at 11:30 PM ET. The Fed’s Beige Book is out today at 2:00 PM ET.
Is a drop of almost 2% after an inflation report a good time to buy gold?
We don’t give investment advice, and no one can reliably call short-term lows. Some buyers add on down days; others buy a fixed amount on a schedule so they don’t have to time the market, which our Auto-Buy program does automatically. Whatever you choose, compare the premium over spot and buy from a dealer that confirms your price when you order.
